Bacon Whiskey Caramelized Onions

by Amanda C. Hughes

There’s nothing better than bacon or whiskey, so why not caramelize some onions using these two blockbuster ingredients? You can add these Bacon Whiskey Caramelized Onions to burgers, vegetables, and just about anything else you desire.

Onions are so good, but they are such a waste of sugar when you’re watching your sugar intake. They contain about 10 grams of net carbohydrates per medium onion, but are they really all that sweet? Nope! The goal of this Bacon Whiskey Caramelized Onions recipe was to make the most of onions by drawing out the natural sweetness by caramelizing them.

You’ll notice the main ingredient here is bacon grease — so if you don’t keep a jar of bacon grease at the ready from your morning cookeries, come back when you do! (Or you can try coconut oil, ghee, etc, but it’ll be severely lacking bacon-y goodness!

Ingredients:

  • 1 sliced onion

Steps:

  1. Heat up a pan on medium low with your bacon grease.
  2. Halve your onion then cut it into long 1/4 inch slices.
  3. Add onions to the pan when hot and let cook for a few minutes. Then use a wooden spoon to break apart any pieces of onions still sticking together.
  4. Mix around every few minutes for about 20 minutes.
  5. Whenever your onions begin to get a little dry and are sticking to the pan, add a tsp of whiskey and mix.
  6. Rotate with 1 tbsp water until you’ve used all the whiskey, then stick with water as needed.
  7. When the onions are soft, sweet and brown, they’re ready!

What kind of onion – red/yellow? Does it matter?

Help! What if we can’t use whiskey. Is there an alternative?

Amanda April 18, 2019 - 7:46 am

You can just use water, it will continue to burn off, so just keep adding a little, then cooking more, for 20 minutes or up until an hour depending on how caramelized you want them.
