While last year this blog was a mix of restaurant reviews and keto recipes – (very low carb, sugarless, breadless recipes) – this year I’m going full force on keto recipes. I cook something new almost every day and I know how hard it is to find a good keto recipe. Low-carb blogs don’t really cut it, because what most consider low-carb, I don’t. I also don’t use many of the processed ingredients that are deemed OK in the low-carb world.
If you’ve never heard of the ketogenic diet, it’s generally a prescribed diet by doctors for certain medical conditions.
It’s like a mix of paleo and atkins – very low carb, but all whole foods. No processed stuff.
It’s not about losing weight for me though, although it’s the huge perk and is measurable. For me, it’s about getting healthier. I’ve been reading all these studies about how cancer is attracted to glucose and how you can literally starve cancer by cutting sugar from your diet (and things like bread, which turn to sugar).
Here’s a really good inspiring resource – http://www.reddit.com/r/keto
And here’s a very good FAQ – https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gZfJejOM8fJsX1iCilmnpp1qmT_KncJwWCR4-EsaEHc/edit?pli=1
And here’s a great video of Gary Taubes that’ll calm your fears about eating too much fat:
By the way, there are good fats and bad fats, and it’s important to know the difference.
Basically, I shop on the outer aisles of the grocery store – proteins and produce. I drink unsweetened almond milk, eat dark chocolate, toast a lot of coconut chips and cook a lot with olive oil and coconut oil. I feel really good about everything I put into my body. Some people dig bacon and burgers, because they’re high in fat (good), but I get most of my fats through good oils and.. well.. I’m a sucker for a ribeye. I only eat fruit in the morning (usually berries, never orange juice or bananas).
I love the keto diet. I never feel hungry, and most cravings can be cured by making something I like with something else – like keto pizza bites. I’m excited to post all of my favorite recipes here on WickedStuffed, and I hope you like them too!
