This year for St. Patrick’s day I thought it would be fun to recreate the not-so-healthy but ever-so-delicious Shamrock Shake.
Now I’m pretty sure you could make this the most easily by finding yourself some keto-friendly(ish) ice cream like Halo Top, Wink, or Enlightened, then blending a cup of it with some heavy cream, a few pops of peppermint extract, and calling it a day. Give that a try if you’d like.
But if you want to be more in control of your ingredients, try this Shamrock Shake recipe instead.

*The nutrition information is just for the Shamrock Shake. Be sure to add any net carbs for whipped cream and any garnish you may use.
Ingredients:
- 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (your favorite keto-friendly brand.)
- 1/2 ripe avocado, cubed
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup almond milk (no sugar added)
- 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract
- A handful of ice cubes
- Optional: 2 drops of Green food coloring
- Optional: Whipped cream
- Optional: Garnish with a Cherry (1 carb), or strawberry (0.5 carbs) for the traditional red hat. You could even use a mint leaf as I’ve done here.
Steps:
- In a blender, combine all the Shamrock Shake ingredients except ice.
- Blend until smooth, then add ice until you reach your desired consistency.
- Add green food coloring if you’re feeling extra festive, and top the Shamrock Shake with some homemade whipped cream and a single cherry or strawberry for a treat.
You might think it’s a good idea to try making a Shamrock Shake with coconut cream for the fats, but coconut won’t work here, it’s a little too overpowering, so I would stick to the heavy whipping cream and sugar-free almond milk. The ice cubes aren’t an exact science and vary in sizes, so just add them until it reaches the consistency you enjoy.

Looks delicious! Can you recommend a keto-friendly substitute for the avocado though? I know avocados are usually used to make things like this thicker and creamier, but I’m deathly allergic to it. 🙁 Any alternatives?
You could try whipping up some cream yourself, and folding it in at the end to keep it thick, but it’ll taste fine without the avocado, only added for fats and color. 🙂
We ended up delaying out St. Patty’s celebration because of the coronavirus lockdown in our area. I was bummed but since then, I started the keto diet and managed to lose over 50 pounds! I actually stumbled on this site looking for another recipe but now I have to make these. We will be doing a “red, white, and green” celebration on the 4th to celebrate both holidays and I absolutely love shamrock shakes. While this doesn’t taste exactly like one, it is still very good. Planning on making several for friends and family to enjoy.

Could egg white protein powder work as an alternative to whey? I do not tolerate whey at all, but I often use egg whites instead… I’d like to try this recipe, just wondering if the amount should be considered the same for both texture and volume to the shake, thank you if you’ll find a second to answer me 😉
I haven’t tried it but report back if you try!
