Nope! The goal of this Bacon Whiskey Caramelized Onions recipe was to make the most of onions by drawing out the natural sweetness by caramelizing them.
You’ll notice the main ingredient here is bacon grease — so if you don’t keep a jar of bacon grease at the ready from your morning cookeries, come back when you do! (Or you can try coconut oil, ghee, etc, but it’ll be severely lacking bacon-y goodness!

What kind of onion – red/yellow? Does it matter?
Yellow onions taste best!
Help! What if we can’t use whiskey. Is there an alternative?
You can just use water, it will continue to burn off, so just keep adding a little, then cooking more, for 20 minutes or up until an hour depending on how caramelized you want them.
